"Orbital Debris and HST WFPC2"

This seminar will cover two topics. The first is an overview of the near-Earth orbital debris environment.  I will review our current understanding of the debris populations, sources of the populations, impact risks to operating satellites, the efforts of the international space community to mitigate the problem, and the possibility of using active debris removal to preserve the near-Earth environment for future generations. The second half of the presentation will focus on a task to conduct micrometeoroid and orbital debris impact damage inspection of the recently returned HST WFPC2 radiator. The goal is to use the data to improve the environment definition of particles in the 0.1 to 1 mm size regime.
