DES is planning to perform an optical imaging survey covering 5000 sq-deg of the southern sky, this survey is optimized for the study of Dark Energy. I will  present some key aspects of the science for the project. I will also discuss some technical aspects of the Dark Energy Camera currently under construction for DES, with emphasis on the novel thick CCDs selected for the focal plane.
