"Environments of Quasars and Star-Forming Galaxies"

We have used GALEX data to select ~ 1000 candidates for Lyman-Break Galaxies (LBGs) in the field of two Large Quasar Groups (LQGs) at redshifts ~ 0.8, 1.3. Candidates were selected using the criteria m(FUV) - m(NUV) >= 2 and m(NUV) <= 24.5. The data form part of a programme to investigate the influence of environment on the formation of quasars and star-forming galaxies from low (z ~ 0.3) through intermediate (z ~ 0.7) to high redshifts (z~1.5). The extreme environments of the LQGs (e.g. high density) are important locations for investigating the roles of galaxy-mergers, cluster-mergers, infall of galaxies, harassment and quenching effects. Multi-object spectroscopy has been obtained for almost 700 LBG candidates using the Magellan 6.5m Baade telescope and IMACS instrument. We present here a preliminary analysis of these spectra.
