"Instrumentation at ESO - Successes, Failures and Challenges"
 

More than a decade of major instrument construction for the VLT has now passed.  Second-generation developments are under way and future E-ELT instrument concepts are under investigation.  With a trend towards ever more difficult and risky instruments this is a good time to review what has gone well and what has not.  I will give a personal view of what seem to me to be successful strategies, mistakes and problems, and challenges we face in the future.
