"Molecular Gas in the Early Universe - Prospects with ALMA (and Status of Construction)"

Molecular line emission has been detected from galaxies with redshifts as high as z~6.  This, together with observations of dust continuum emission, is evidence for prodigious star formation in these objects.  The present number of galaxies with z>1 that have detected CO emission is small, roughly 40, but that number is expected grow exponentially with ALMA.  The properties of these galaxies, deduced from observations with present facilities, give a tantalizing hint of what we can expect with ALMA for the study of star formation in the early Universe.  A brief report on the ALMA project and the status of construction will be presented.
