I will present the final results of the ACS "Local Cosmology from Isolated dwarfs (LCID)" project, which has used over 100 orbits of HST time to obtain color-magnitude diagrams reaching the oldest main sequence turnoffs
(V~28) in six isolated Local Group galaxies (two dIrr, IC1613 and Leo A,
two transition dIrr/dSph, LGS3 and Phoenix, and the only two isolated dSph
in the Local Group, Cetus and Tucana). Complete star formation histories
have been derived through comparison with synthetic color-magnitude
diagrams.
I will discuss the detailed star
formation and chemical enrichment histories that we have derived for the
LCID galaxies, with particular emphasis on the similarities and
differences of the six galaxies in the sample, in relation with their
morphological type, and on whether their characteristic features can be
interpreted as signatures of both global (UV background) and local phenomena
(SNe feedback, self-shielding). |
