"The Life and Times of Planets and Brown Dwarfs: New Directions and New Frontiers"

The discovery of more than 500 extra-solar planets has seriously challenged our understanding of planet formation. Together with over 800 brown dwarfs, they have forced us to ask fundamental questions: How and where do planets form? Do brown dwarfs form like planets or stars? Do these substellar objects survive stellar evolution? In this talk I will present an overview of the current state of play in substellar research, and projects I am involved with that will address some of these questions.
