"Mass-loading of Winds in Starburst Galaxies: The Curious Case of 30 Doradus in the LMC"

I will talk about the interaction between the combined stellar wind and radiation field from a massive star cluster and the surrounding neutral clouds employing both theoretical and observational approaches. This poorly understood phenomenon, mass-loading of a stellar wind, plays a vital role in disrupting the surrounding molecular clouds and driving galactic outflows. In the theoretical model, I consider that the strength of stellar wind determines whether mass-loading occurs via regular photoevaporation or wind ablation, which refers to the process by which cloud material is swept downstream by the dynamical force of the wind. I will also present the first data set that resolves mass-loading at the stellar wind-ambient cloud interface. The Pa_beta emission in the near IR was observed at such interfaces in 30 Doradus with the Gemini South telescope. The high velocity and spatial resolution (6 km/s and 0.14 pc) data strongly suggest that mass-loading occurred via wind ablation in a starburst region.
