Organized by IAU Commission 50 (Protection of Existing and Potential
Observatory Sites), the meeting was held between 13th and 17th November in
Marrakech University, Morroco .
The goal of the meeting was to assess the state
of the art with regard to astronomical site testing in the visible, IR
and radio ranges.
The workshop was organized with the help of the International Astronomical Union (IAU/UAI) and the International Radio Scientific Union (IRSU/URSI). This international meeting was a large success due to its number of participants (120), their scientific quality and finally to the large number of nations they represented (26).
The meeting took place under the high patronage of the King of Morocco, with the presence of the State Secretary for public scientific research, during the opening session. Each of the 8 sessions was introduced by invited talks, and about 70 speakers brought their own contributions. Several "Grand Public" talks were given either in English or French. A "Star Night" was organized at the Oukaimeden Astronomical site, 70 km from Marrakech, in the High Atlas Mountains. A round-table was planned with participation of the local authorities and many scientific investigators from various countries to promote the construction of the first national astronomical observatory. This meeting led to the creation of an International Scientific Committee.

During the Workshop, a booklet was edited and distributed with the summary of each talk and much other information related to the meeting.

Avec le concours de l'Union Astronomique Internationale (IAU) et de l'Union Radio Scientifique Internationale (URSI), nous avons organisé un colloque intitulé: ``Astronomical Site Evaluation in the Visible and Radio Range'' qui s'est tenu à Marrakech du 13 au 17 Novembre 2000. Cette réunion internationale a connu un grand succès aussi bien par le nombre de ses participants (120), que par leur qualité et par le nombre de nations représentées (26).
La recontre s'est déroulée sous le haut patronage du roi du Maroc avec la présence, lors de sa séance d'ouverture, du secrétaire d'Etat à la recherche scientifique. En plus des 70 participants qui ont pris la parole, plusieurs conférences ``grand public'' ont eu lieu, en français et en anglais et une ``nuit des étoiles'' a été organisée sur le site même de l'Oukaimeden. Une table ronde s'est déroulée avec la participation des autorités locales qui a abouti à la constitution d'un Comité Scientifique International ainsi que d'un groupe local de suivi du projet de développement d'un observatoire national marocain.
Nous avons béneficié de l'aide de l'Université de Marrakech, dans laquelle s'est déroulé le colloque, de l'European Southern Observatory (ESO) et de l'Université de Nice.
Lors du colloque il a été distribué un document que nous avons édité et dans lequel figurait le résumé de toutes les communications ainsi que toutes les informations concernant la rencontre.
Un groupe de trois éditeurs (Casiana Muñoz-Tuñòn, Zouhair Benkhaldoun et Jean Vernin) se charge de l'édition des actes du colloque qui paraîtra sous les auspices de l'Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP).
