Make a Finding Chart
-
First,
Get an Image of the Guide Field from
the
Digitized Sky
Survey. On the DSS page, choose the "Save image to disk" option.
Save
the image as "imagename.fits." You may also choose gzip compression
("imagename.fits.gz").
-
Next,
Find Guide Stars from the USNO A2.0 Catalog
-
For tip-tilt, limit the
magnitudes
to ~ 9 < Mag < 16 (go fainter if there are no candidates in this
range, but V = 18 is the limit).
-
Use the Basic
Form, or the Detailed
Form. This will produce a plot in your browser window. Stop here,
or
continue to make an overlay on the DSS image. Make sure to download
the star list from the USNO A2.0 plot
(it's
a link at the bottom of the plot you just made).
-
Alternately, you can plot
select objects by making a text file with RA and DEC
in free format: hh mm ss dd mm ss, one object per line.
-
Then get the IRAF script "make_chart"
to create the final chart. Read the included comments in the script for
install and execution info.
