Mechanical Engineer

CTIO seeks a Mechanical Engineer to augment its team responsible for the installation of a new instrument, the Dark Energy Camera (DECam). Candidate should hold a university degree in mechanical engineering and possess at least 5 years experience with, and an in-depth understanding of, issues involved in the handling of fragile loads of up to 10 tons and the positioning of such loads to sub-millimeter precision at heights of 30m.  Should be familiar with modern computer aided design (CAD) software and have experience in the design, fabrication and use of auxiliary equipment required for heavy lifting and placement, including modern metrology tools used to navigate and measure that placement.  Experience in design, manufacture and use of precision instrumentation in general is an advantage.  Some facility with the English language is highly desirable.  Candidate should be in good physical health and capable of working at the altitude of the observatory (2200-m) for up to a week at a time.

The initial contract will be to begin immediately and for one year, extendable to two depending on availability of funding and suitability of the candidate.
