Telescope Mechanic

Under the direct supervision of the Telescope Support Supervisor, perform responsible and advanced technical assignments in planning and preparing installation of new equipment in a safe and reliable manner as per the Observatory Standards. Prepare preventative maintenance schedules for installed equipment and perform such. Capable of troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing existing equipment. Work is performed within established policies or general instructions but requires initiative and judgment. Must be knowledgeable and practice safe working standards as per local regulations. Must be willing to respond to repair emergencies after normal working hours. Must be capable to work at altitude and inconvenient locations.

Personal Qualifications:
Must be sufficiently mature to work under stress but physically fit to work at 2000+ meters altitude. Physically fit to carry heavy tool bags and test equipment, work on high places, climb stairs, and work near or in potentially dangerous locations. Must be able to work as a team member. Must be able to perform tasks such as writing detailed reports, purchase orders, maintaining files and documentation, stocking parts, cleaning and adjusting equipment on a preventative maintenance schedule.

Education:
Proficient in English language a must, the majority of the existing documents and manuals are in English, must be able to communicate in English , verbal and via written correspondence. Majority of the studies should be in the field of machine shop operation, such as lathes, drill press, welding, and milling machines.

Experience:
5 plus years of experience in the maintenance and care for delicate instruments, maintaining and installing delicate instrumentation, and optics. Must be able to identify, and diagnose problems and be able to repair on the spot or recommend a worked out solution. Must be imaginative, resourceful, and willing to make decisions and accept responsibility for them. Must be able to read and interpret mechanical drawings, specifications, and apply recommendations per the manufacturers manuals.
