"Controlling Light Pollution in my part of the planet - Status and
Further
Steps."
Here we invite people to come along with poster presentations
covering
what is going on in their part of the world. Oral presentations can be
given to back up some of the posters. Pierantonio - if for any reason
we
do not have enough room for your posters (we shall make every effort to
find space), then we will have to show some at this session and the
rest
on the following Monday.
- 1. Africa (Bob Stobie - 5 mins)

Pollution"
R.S.Stobie

Northern
Chile" Pedro Sanhueza (OPCC-Chile), Rene Mendez (CTIO) and Malcolm
Smith

National Observatory, Akdeniz University, Antalya
- 4. Europe (Pierantonio/Margarita/Nigel - 25 mins)
- 4.1 "Science or Fashion. Which determines the choice of Street
Lighting?"
Alan C. Pickwick. (Manchester Grammar School, UK - Chair of Education
Section,
RAS)
Abstract:In the UK, the first discharge lamps were used
for
street lighting in the 1930s. Low pressure mercury and low pressure
sodium
lamps were both in use by the 1940s. Astronomers have expressed a
preference
for lamps that emit narrow spectral lines as these can be filtered out
at the telescope. What sort of lighting would you expect to predominate
in the UK today?
- 4.2 "Brief summary of work in Portugal on
Light Pollution
Control" J. Pereira
Osorio (Univ. do Porto, Portugal)
Abstract: The population of Portugal is mainly
concentrated
close to the sea. Therefore, the mountains, located in the interior,
are
not much affected by light pollution. Although studies or measures to
control
light pollution were never activated, the recognition of the economic
benefits
of using adequate illumination systems brought a considerable
improvement
in recent years. This may also be facilitated by the present population
transfer from the center of big towns to their surroundings.
- 4.3
"Brief summary of work in Spain on Light Pollution Control"
Javier
Diaz Castro (OTPC-IAC, Tenerife, Spain)
Abstract: The main part of this presentation will deal
with
recent work in adapting outdoor lighting in La Palma and Tenerife. The
Spanish Parliament has agreed to study the light pollution problem. A
study
commission will be set up. At the end of this year the Government of
Barcelona
is expected to pass a law on control of light pollution.
- 4.4
"Introduction to work in Italy on Light Pollution Control"
Dr. Pierantonio
Cinzano (Univ. di Padova, Italy) (Includes reference to Pierantonio's
posters.)
- 4.5 "Update on work in Holland on Light Pollution Control" Duco
Schreuder
(CIE)
- 4.6 POSTER: "Notes on using ULOR vs UWLR ratios". Javier
Diaz-Castro
(OTPC-IAC,
Tenerife, Spain) {ULOR=Upward Light Output Ratio, upward flux/total
lamp
flux. UWLR=Upward Waste Light Ratio}
- 4.7 POSTER: "A Schools Initiative Leading to a Proposal for a
Law in
the
Parliament of Catalonia" Rosa M. Ros (Technical University of Barcelona)
Abstract: In 1998 the group "Cel Fosc" (Dark Sky)
started
an action in Catalonia schools. The original proposal was to prepare a
Map of Light Pollution of Catalonia with the co-operation of school
students
and teachers. This initiative has become a proposal for a Law in the
Parliament
of Catalonia next September 2000. The objective of this poster is to
explain
the process carried out and the following actions (school programs),
which
will be organized to continue in this field.
