VACANCY NOTICE
The Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Corporation, which operates a 3.6
meter optical telescope on Mauna Kea, Island of Hawaii, has an immediate
vacancy for a
DETECTOR SPECIALIST
DUTIES: As a member of the observatory's Electronics Group, the
Specialist will help to develop and maintain advanced detector
instrumentation for astronomical observations. He/she will be
responsible for preventive, emergency, and routine maintenance of
observatory detector, vacuum, and cryogenic systems. The incumbent will
analyze, report, and make improvements to the performance of these
detector systems and related support equipment. He/she will install the
systems on the telescope and verify their readiness for scientific
observations. Design and fabrication of electronic circuitry for use
with detector instrument systems is required.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: A B.S. degree in engineering or physics,
or an equivalent diploma from a technical school is required. Four
years of working experience with low-noise imaging detector systems and
electronics involving hands-on participation are necessary. Experience
with low noise, high quantum efficiency detectors, such as CCDs,
including selection, handling, installation, optimization,
characterization and operation is also required, as is experience or
education in digital signal processors used in a real-time control
environment. Experience with CCD controllers, residual gas analyzers and
CCD performance measurements is desired. Work done on astronomical
instruments would be an important asset.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS: The individual selected must pass a physical
examination showing aptitude to carry out duties at an altitude of 4200
meters. Must be able to work irregular and night hours as occasionally
required. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle on an unpaved
mountain road. Documentation to verify eligibility for employment in the
United States will have to be furnished at the start of work.
COMPENSATION: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and
