I read your detective story with interest!
In answer to your queries, I hope perhaps Paddy Oates may add to what I say
here. Anyway, basically at RGO things were cleaned, but never by holding
components in gloves, whilst in solvents. Can't you manage with an
ultrasonic solvent bath, and stainless tongs as you suggest later?
Also, we only baked cryostats extensively when trying to get good results
with Loral/Lesser-thinned CCDs. Baking will help to get a good vacuum more
quickly of course. We used heating tape (to less than 100C, I think).
In your case, it seems that extensive cleaning caused the problem- what an
irony!
