The next conference is tentatively scheduled to be held late Nov. 2001. I
have been asked by our head organizer, Bonner Denton, to investigate moving
the conference to a new venue. There are several reasons that prompted this
search. Many of us are increasingly turned off by the traffic, crowding,
and high prices that now prevail on Grand Cayman. These trends seem likely
to continue or get worse in the future. In addition, the most accessable
scuba diving is going rapidly downhill and can no longer be considered
world-class, and the snorkelling is mediocre at best. So, I have been
looking for another place that is more laid-back and less expensive, but
with enough good hotel/conference space to hold our little group and with
superb scuba and snorkelling. That place I think is Bonaire. The worst
drawback for US participants is a somewhat higher airfare and a longer
travel day. For our European friends, the difference is smaller and may be
zero, as there is a new charter outfit now flying from NL. There are
several large and small beaches, both at the resorts and reachable via
rental car, as well as the best shore diving and snorkelling in the
Caribbean. The geography is similar to Arizona, surrounded by clear blue water.
So, if those on the list here have any inputs to give me on this subject,
please post or write me directly.
