The Goodman Data-Reduction Pipeline

The Goodman Data-Reduction Pipeline (or GDRP) is a Python-based package developed with the goal of processing raw spectra obtained with the Goodman High Throughput Spectrograph at SOAR, and producing one-dimensional, wavelength-calibrated, science quality spectra, in a highly automated way, with minimal user intervention.

The pipeline is divided into two modules:

  • 1) redccd is used to perform standard data-processing like subtract bias, correct by flat and clean cosmic rays.
  • 2) redspec  performs the basic spectrum operations of object detection, tracing, extraction, background estimation and subtraction, and wavelength calibration.

After some minimal data organization, the user needs only run one single command-line instruction.
The pipeline has been designed to be run without having to perform any installation, by using a dedicated machine available at SOAR via VNC (
Virtual Network Computing) for users that have access to the SOAR private network. This is the preferred option, because it keeps the user from running into problems like the version of Python, whether all required libraries have been installed, or the if the GDRP version is the latest one. However, we also have provided users with the option of downloading and installing the pipeline in their own machine. The appropriate instructions are described both at the Goodman Data-Reduction Pipeline User Manual and at the Download and Install page. The Goodman DRP is available on GITHub, and makes use of Astropy modules. It has been extensively documented to allow users to develop their own modifications.
