Observing Proposal Preparation Checklist
Follow these steps to work out the instrumental setup and exposure times needed to carry out your observations:
Decide what wavelengths you want to cover with high priority, and what wavelengths have lower priority.
Decide what S/N per pixel you require at these wavelengths.
Use
ECHMAP --- Interactive Wavelength Coverage Simulator
to work out an acceptable format. Refer to entries in
Basic Description of the Spectrograph
for available choices.
Compute either the monochromatic magnitudes
AB = -2.5 log(F_lambda) + - 5 log(lambda) - 22.40 = -2.5 log(f_nu) - 48.59
or the monochromatic flux per Angstrom (F_lambda) for the line or lines which will require the longest exposure time.
Use the
Exposure Time Calculator
to find the exposure time required to reach the desired S/N.
Iterate as required.
Describe what you have done here, and give the results, in answer to the proposal question about "Technical and Scientific Feasibility".
