This drawing illustrates how a massive object changes the curvature of space. In the absence of a massive object, light from the True object travels in a straight line. However, in the presence of a massive object, space is curved, therefore the lightpath is curved. Instead of the True object, an observer sees the Image of the object at the position where light traveling in a straight line would have come from.
