NICHOLAS B. SUNTZEFF

I am a research astronomer at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO). CTIO is the southern hemisphere observatory of the the National Optical Astronomy Observatories (NOAO), and is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy Inc. (AURA), under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). The Observatory has its headquarters in La Serena, Chile.

The tallest mountain on the CTIO recinto is Cerro Pachon, which is southern hemisphere site for the International Gemini Project, a collaborative project between the US, UK, Canada, Chile, Brazil, Australia, and Argentina to build two 8m mirror telescopes.

This is a beautiful night-time picture taken by Roger Smith with an astronomical grade CCD. If you click on the image, you will get a full resolution (180K) image. The 4m dome is in the center of the frame and the 1.5m is to the right. You can clearly see the Milky Way, the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. Can you find the southern cross?

My research specialties are supernovae, cosmology, stellar astronomy, and astronomical site testing.
