SN2000cx in NGC 524

This is a very interesting Type Ia. It was caught about 1 week before maximum by the KAIT group. The Type Ia is a peculiar type - very bright with a spectrum before maximum light similar to SN1991T. We started observing it on 18-9 July 2000 with the CTIO 0.9m and YALO 1m telescopes. I will add more information as it comes in.

Finding chart for SN2000cx in NGC 524 from the DSS with the SN position marked. Field is 10 arcmin wide.

Finding chart for SN2000cx in NGC 524 from a V image taken on 19 July 2000 (UT) with the CTIO YALO 1m telescope and facility CCD. Seeing was about 1 arcsecond in this 115s x 3 exposure.

Infrared finding chart for SN2000cx. This is a J image taken on 26 July 2000 with the CTIO/YALO 1m telescope and ANDYCAM dual beam imager. The exposure is 60s x 5. The internal vignetting produces the poor quality sky subtractions on the right hand side of the image. The image is 3.75 arcmin across.

Color image of SN2000cx. This is a true color image of SN2000cx and the S0 galaxy NGC 524. The supernova is the very blue object near the center of the image. This color image was made by combining BVI images from the YALO 1m telescope taken on 19 July 2000. Note that the S0 galaxy is yellow in color, as it is a galaxy with no star formation outside perhaps the nucleus. The galaxy lies at about 8Mpc from our Milky Way galaxy. The orientation is the same as in the V finding chart above.
