This is a Type Ia supernova that was discovered by R. Chassagne, Ste. Clotilde, Ile de Reunion on 12 June 2001. We began to observe it 13 Jun when it was right at maximum light. The galaxy is an Sc spiral with very active star formation in the disk.
Finding chart for SN2001cn. This is a 30s V exposure of IC 4758 taken with the CTIO 0.9m telescope and facility CCD imager. The SN is marked. There are two stars near the SN which can be used as local standards. Star 1 is bluer and probably a better standard.
Color image of SN2001cn. This is a true color image of SN2001cn. The data were BVI data taken on the 0.9m telescope on 15 June. The SN is quite blue showing that it was caught early. The seeing was quite variable. The BI images were much poorer images which causes blue and red halos around many of the stars.
